Accroche Aubette 1928
The building of the Aubette has survived the centuries at the rhythm of the highlights of Strasbourg's history. Inaugurated on 16 February 1928 in a building designed in the 18th century, the Aubette broke with the art of its time with its numerous halls designed for entertainment. The project's builders, Paul and André Horn from Mulhouse, who were passionate about modern art, brought in Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Hans Jean Arp and Theo Van Doesburg.
The latter saw the place as a total work of art and suggested to the clients that they design the decoration from floor to ceiling, from the furniture to the signage. The collective and transdisciplinary intervention is radical and based on the use of simple geometric shapes and a reduced colour palette. With the design of the stage set, the furniture as well as the typography, the three artists wanted to create a "total work of art" and thus realised a major work of modernism.
From 1938, however, the entire decoration was covered up again. The classification of the cinema ball and staircase as a historical monument in 1985 and the ballroom and foyer bar in 1989 were followed by two construction sites, one completed in 1994 and the other in 2006.
Today, the Aubette 1928 once again hosts numerous art and cultural events.
